Was It Over When I Reminded You of Her?

Barcelona: A Love Untold (2016)

People tend to be attracted to different types of individuals based on personal preferences, experiences, and values. Some might be drawn to those who share similar interests or lifestyles, while others are captivated by qualities like kindness, confidence, or a sharp sense of humor.

To be honest, I’ve never struggled to catch people’s attention — maybe it’s due to my straight posture, which stands out even in a crowd, or perhaps, it’s my sleek, rebonded hair. It could also be the clarity of my speech, and the way I articulate each word with precision.

Despite this, it took me a long time to feel comfortable opening up to someone who genuinely showed interest in knowing the real me. Trust has never been something I’ve given easily; I’ve always been cautious about who I let in. Yet, there’s this person who managed to bring my walls down from being such a pester. He said that my snobby attitude made me stand out and that I looked smart.

For a while now, the traits I used to love about myself began to feel like flaws, as if they weren’t enough.

As I start to consider committing to this person, a part of me worries. It feels like he is merely searching for something — or someone — to fill the void left by a past love. I can’t shake the feeling that, deep down, he’s settling, seeking someone who resembles the one he lost: a person with straight hair, light skin, and confidence; someone who carries herself gracefully through a crowd and possesses those big doe eyes that captivated him before.

The thought lingers: am I being seen for who I truly am, or just a shadow of someone else’s memory?

His warmth surrounds me, yet it’s clear his heart is elsewhere. Attempts to fall for my touch feel futile as his mind drifts to memories of her. He speaks negatively about the past, but it’s evident he still holds a place for her in his heart. Clinging to the hope of what could be, there’s a painful awareness that he remains lost in the moments they’ve shared.

The moment he saw reflections of their time together in my eyes, the reality settled:

it was over before it even began.
